Tips for watching 13 Reasons Why
- Do not allow your child to watch 13 Reasons Why, if your child is dealing with depression or an anxiety disorder. The reason for this is the impact the show could have on your child. There are a number of situations that could be triggering for anyone, but especially someone dealing with depression or anxiety.
- If you kids are going to watch 13 Reasons Why, be sure to watch it with them. This will allow you to note how your child responds to certain situations and if see if any of the recurring themes seem to bother your child more than others.
- If you do not watch 13 Reasons Why with them, check in with them after every episode. Be sure to see if certain situations are bothering your child, or see if they have any questions to what they have watched.
- No matter what, make sure your child knows they can come to you to talk about the show, be open to them asking questions, or just allow them or their friends to come to you if the need help.
- Suggest to your children that they do not binge watch all the shows (watch a number of them or even all of them at one time). Suggest that they take time in between each episode. This way you can talk to your child and also be on the lookout for any changes in their behavior and attitudes. Continue to check in your child over the next couple weeks.
- Have discussions about the show and see if anything they have seen in the show is happening in their life. Help them to understand that while what is going on in the show can really happen; also remind them that it is a show.
- Remind them that if they are going through some of the same things on the show, the ending does not have to be the same, and that you want them to get help.
- Let them know that there is help out there. Let them know about local resources and hotlines they and their friends can utilize.
